Two Months Down, Eight to Go! (October 24-28)

I cannot believe that just about two months of school have already passed! It seems like just yesterday that our third graders were running through the doors of Portable 31 for the first time, nervous and excited. Now, it seems like we are all old friends.

I am glad to announce that our attendance has been continuing to look very good! Students have been able to ward off colds and coughs. Hopefully, it will stay that way!

Parent-Teacher Conferences are imminent. Please check your date and time and come to school with any questions you may have! I'm excited to meet with each one of you and discuss the progress of our students.

Reading
This week, our focus of study in reading was sequencing. Since we have discussed sequencing in class previously and because students were taught to sequence in previous years, studying sequencing was review for many of our third graders. Students learned to sequence events in a story to better comprehend what they read.
On Wednesday, we did a fun activity focused on sequencing and reading fluency. I read the class one of my favorite books, The Seedling Child by Ruth Bornstein. Each student received a section of the story to read aloud. After the students practiced reading their parts fluently, they had to sequence their parts from beginning to end by themselves. Last, students were able to perform the story aloud once again. I was so impressed with how fluently they spoke!

Writing
We had a very special guest come to teach a lesson in our class this week! Mrs. Sharon Feather, a mentor teacher in the Mukilteo School District, taught a lesson on poetry on Wednesday of this week. Students wrote People Poems and Favorite Place Poems. I was blown away by the words written by our third graders. What poets we have in our class! Some of the poems brought me to tears!
We will be publishing our poetry next week and composing a class book of our final products. Students will also get a chance to take their poems home to show their family members. Please ask your child about these poems- they turned out beautifully!

Math
At the beginning of the week, we finished up Unit 3 and took the Unit 3 test. I will share Unit 3 test results (along with other math test results) with parents and guardians at conferences.
Next, we began Unit 5 in our Math Expressions book. We began to study rounding numbers to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred. We also explored the greater than, less than, and equal signs with large numbers and equations. I am pleased to see many of our students understanding rounding and the greater than/less than signs. Our large number line in the classroom is providing an excellent visual for students still developing their number sense.

Social Studies
We continued to work on our Create a Culture Unit this week. Students were able to use the skills that they acquired in our Map Skills Unit to draw a map of their imagined country. Students drew a compass and a legend on their maps as well. I am very excited to see students' finished products once our Create a Culture Unit draws to a close! We have some very creative students in our class!

Spelling
Students received their third spelling list this week. After grading the tests, I can say that most students did an excellent job studying and preparing throughout the week. Please help your child remember to practice spelling their words at home!

Art
On Monday of this week, students were able to create some beautiful autumn art pieces. Students learned about warm and cool colors and were then able to create artwork that featured contrasting colors. Students learned that colors directly across from each other on the color wheel are opposite, or complimentary, colors. When putting those colors next to each other, the colors "pop" out at the viewer. Students were able to make their warm-colored leaves "pop" against the cool, pastel backgrounds.

VIP of the Week: Kyle
This week, Kyle was our VIP of the Week! Kyle wants to be a policeman when he grows up. His favorite color is red. Thanks for sharing with us, Kyle!

Announcements
  • The weather is changing very quickly! Please send your students to school with warm apparel. Coats should have hoods due to the increase of rainfall. Thankfully, our portable is nice and toasty!
  • Most students are remembering to get their Homework Sheets signed every night. Students need their parent signatures to earn their stars on their homework star chart- please help them remember to get their Homework Sheets signed by a parent or guardian!
  • Several students have come to class with Halloween candy and/or snacks to pass out to the class. Thank you so much to those of you who have donated food to our class! I will be passing out candy brought to class on Halloween (Monday).
  • As always, remember that students are expected to read at least 25 minutes every night. Please do not sign off on the Homework Sheet until your student has read, or is read to, for at least 25 minutes.
