Winter Wonderland! (January 9-20)

I hope that everyone has been able to stay warm and safe in the snow this past week! Hopefully everyone has gotten a chance to relax and enjoy some play time.

Parents may have questions about when the snow days will be made up. The state requires for children in Washington state to attend school for 180 days, so the days missed this week will be added back onto the MSD calendar. The snow days have not been rescheduled yet. As soon as they are, all students and parents will receive an updated calendar.

I apologize for the late update. Most likely due to the poor weather, I have been experiencing technical difficulties from home.

This update will be short and sweet!

Reading & Writing
During the last week of school (January 9-13), our class studied main idea and details in reading and writing. We defined "main idea" and "details" and identified each in the story we read in class. We continue to read non-fiction stories in our new reading unit about animal habitats.
We continued our study of main idea and details in writing. Students were taught how to use a graphic organizer to clarify the main idea and details of a story. This graphic organizer was used to assist students in paragraph writing. Students were given a paragraph writing homework assignment on Friday, January 13, and should turn them in this upcoming Monday.

Math
We are continuing to learn about multiplication and division in class. Students should be memorizing the following multiplication problems: 0x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 10x.
Beginning Monday, we will continue to learn our multiplication and division facts. I sent students home with paper flash cards last week. If you are not able to purchase flash cards from the store, the flash cards given to students in class will suffice.
It is essential for students to continue practicing their multiplication facts at home. I suggest 10 minutes of practice each night. Hopefully students were able to practice over the long snow week!

Science
Last week, we began our first science unit! Students were very excited. Our first unit concentrates on the physics of sound. Upon returning, students will begin conducting experiments in small groups to explore the idea of sound.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Assembly
On Friday, January 13, we had a school-wide assembly honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Students from Discovery shared literature and songs highlighting the achievements and impact of Martin Luther King. Furthermore, Mrs. Wayman put together an incredible powerpoint presentation featuring the artwork from students at our school. Nathan, Louis, and Mayra had artwork featured in the presentation. Way to go!
I hope that everyone was able to contemplate the affect of Martin Luther King Jr. over the long weekend
and think about the small ways in which we all can improve the lives of others.

VIP of the Week: Alex A.
Alex A. was the last VIP of the Week! Alex A. is a strong mathematician. He always impresses his classmates with his knowledge of addition, subtraction, and multiplication math facts. Alex is a very helpful student and we enjoy having him in class. Thanks, Alex!

Stay warm!
