I apologize in advance for the absence of pictures in this blog post. I did not bring my camera on vacation with me.
We will resume school on Wednesday, February 22nd. Please take the time over the next few days to spend quality time with family and friends, sleep in, and read!
Reading
We continued reading picture books from the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Contest this week. A couple of the books we read this week are titled Don't Slam the Door and Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum. Students also continued drawing conclusions using evidence from the text. Students took a short quiz on using evidence on Thursday.
As previously mentioned, we are holding a reading contest once again for the month of February. Students who read 10 points or more within the month will be able to attend a pizza party after the contest is concluded. If all students in the class are able to meet this goal, we will have an ice cream and pizza party. If students are reading 25 minutes or more every night, this goal should be easily met! Furthermore, our students should be reading throughout this mid-winter vacation. Thank you for your support in helping your children grow into strong readers!
Math
In math, we continue to learn and make more connects with multiplication and division. The new unit that we began covers more multiplication facts and more ways to think about multiplication and division strategies. Students should continue to study their math facts at home. I have provided a math fact link at the bottom of this blog post under "Announcements" if your child would like to practice math facts online.
We also are continuing to switch classes to practice math MSP test skills. Students are learning to show correct strategies in their work. Students will take the MSP in May.
Science
We learned about pitch and volume this week in our science unit. Students were able to experiment with a variety of scientific "instruments" to explore pitch and volume. We learned that pitch refers to frequency and volume means the loudness of sound.
Next week, we will continue to learn more about vibrations and pitch with different musical instruments.
Valentine's Day!
Our Valentine's Day party was a huge success! Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers who helped out at our party. Additionally, thanks to those of you who sent treats to school for our party.
Students passed their Valentine's Day cards out during the first half of the party. During the second half of the party, students rotated through four craft/game/food stations. Students also got the opportunity to have their faces painted, as I'm sure many of you saw when your child came home! I hope that their tummies weren't hurting too badly that night!
